An examination of conscience based on the ten commandments.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS: The three primary commandments they refer to our relationship with God. The other seven refer to our relationship with others.
This corresponds to the teaching of Jesus when he says there are two commandments.  The first commandment is to love God with all the heart and soul.  The second:  To love others as you love yourself.
1.TO LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.

Catechism of the Catholic Church #2083-2141

• Have I had any serious doubts about the truths in faith?
• Have I come to deny faith, disbelief, that is, voluntary rejection or some of its truths, in my thoughts or in front of others?
• Have I despaired of my salvation or abused my trust in God, presuming that he would not calmly abandon me to sin?
• Have I spoken internally or externally due to illness, age or bad circumstances against the Lord when some misfortune happened to me?
• Have I abandoned the means that are absolutely necessary for my salvation for example abandoning sacramental confession, not being able to go to it?
• Have I taken care to reach the appropriate doctrinal and spiritual formation?
• Have I spoken without reverence, worse still, with sarcasm of holy things, of the sacraments of the Church, of it ministers?
• Have I been indifferent to God, that is, have I rejected his love, his providence or his plans?
• Have I abandoned dealings with God in prayer or in the sacraments?
• Have I been lukewarm, sour, spiritually lazy or insensitive to the joys of God?
• Have I allowed myself to be carried away by anguish in the face of the uncertainties that walking in faith brings?
• Have I, in religious matters, forced someone to act against their conscience, whether public or private, alone or in an association.
• Have I boasted in my abilities, that is to say in my own belief that I can achieve a full life to my measure without the help of God?
• Have I abused the omnipotence or mercy of God, hoping to obtain forgiveness without conversion and the glory of God without merit?
• Have I practiced superstition or spiritualism, or magic or sorcery?
• Have I practiced mental control dynamics or methods considering that the mind is God and confusing myself with God.
• Have I given credence to reincarnation or to the so-called new era?
• Have I fallen into idolatry, divinizing what is not of God or putting thing and people before the glory and honor that are only due to God?
• Have I practiced divination, evocation of the dead, horoscope, astrology, palmistry, recourse to a medium, interpretation of omens, occultism, or the use of charms?
• Do I belong to a society or ideological movement contrary to faith, such as Freemasonry, Theo physical societies, or political parties that require atheism in their members?
• Have I unworthily received (without performing the sacrament of confession and needing it) some sacrament?
• Have I read or retained books, magazines, or newspapers that go against faith or morals?  Have I given them to others to read?
• Have I turned a deaf ear to sermons and homilies that could have done me a lot of good?
• Have I sinned by omission, neglecting the means to acquire a religious culture that enables me to be a witness to Christ in example and word?
• Have I done without desiring things referring to God?
• Have I blasphemed? Have I done it in front of others?
• Have I carried out the action of tempting God, that is to say, by putting to the test, by word or deed, His goodness and His omnipotence, done in front of others?
• Have I been indifferent when hearing some blasphemy of seeing that God is offended, that is, without performing an act of reparation, at least internally?
•   Am I one who chooses to believe what I want to believe or not to believe in respect to what the Catholic Church teaches?
• Do I discuss the mandates of the church with disrespect or contempt, without recognizing the living presence of Christ in the Church?
• Have I participated in agnosticism, that is, stating that it is impossible to prove the existence of God?
• Have I tried to buy grace or friendship with God, either with the payment of money or by the virtue of friendship I have with consecrated people, as if my personal conversion were not needed?

• Have I made any vow, oath or promise (when an act, prayer, alms, tithe or offering, a pilgrimage, etc. is promised to God) and have I failed to fulfill it because of myself?
• Have I honored the Holy name of God?
• Have I uttered the name of God (blasphemy) without respect, in anger, mockery, hatred, reproach, defiance, or in any way irreverent?
• Have I spoken insults or abuses against the Church, the names of God, the Virgin Mary or the Saints?
• Have I sued the name of God as magical?
• Have I sworn, (taking God as witness of what I say or as divine veracity as a guarantee of my own truth) without truth?
• Have is sworn without need, without prudence or for something of little need?
• Have I sworn to do something wrong?
• Have I repaired damage that may have been caused by my actions?
• Have I performed perjury, that is to speak under oath what I had no intention of fulfilling?

• Have I unnecessarily missed Mass on Sundays or holy days such as Easter, Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension, Holy Mary Mother of God...?
• Have I been voluntarily distracted or have I arrived so late that I have not really complied with the precept?
• Sunday is traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble services for the sick, weak and elderly. Have I been insensitive to those good, pious and charitable works?
• Does my rest involve sin because of what I do or don't do, because of what I usually say, see or imagine?

• Have I disobeyed my parents or superiors in important things?
• Do I have a disorderly desire for independence that leads me to disregard the desires of my parents or legitimate superiors simply because they send it to me?
• Have I saddened my parents or superiors with my conduct?
• Have I threatened or mistreated them by word or deed, or have I wished them some serious or minor harm?
• Have I stopped helping them with their spiritual or material needs?
• Do I get carried away with a bad temper and get angry with them frequently and without justifiable reason?
• Am I selfish with the things I have, and it hurts me to leave them to others in my house?
• Have I quarreled with my brothers?
• Have I stopped talking to them and have I not provided the necessary means for reconciliation?
• Have I given a bad example to my brothers?
• Have I insulted, despised, abandoned my parents?
• Have I been haughty or ungrateful to my parents, grandparents or siblings?
• Have I despised the lessons, examples or good advice that my siblings could give me, or especially my parents or legitimate superiors?
• Do I remain indifferent to the needs, problems and suffering of the people around me, especially those who are close to me for reasons of coexistence or work?
• Am I a cause of sadness for my co-workers due to negligence, impoliteness or bad character?
• Have I set a bad example for my children by not fulfilling my religious, family or professional duties?
• Have I firmly corrected their defects or have I let them go for comfort?
• Do I always correct my children fairly and out of love for them, or do I get carried away for selfish reasons or personal vanity, because they bother me, because they make me look bad in front of others or because they interrupt me?
• Have I threatened or mistreated them by word or deed, or have I wished them some serious or minor harm?
• Have I neglected my obligation to help them fulfill their religious duties and to avoid bad company?
• Have I abused my authority and ascendancy by forcing them to receive the sacraments, without thinking that out of shame or human excuse, they could do so without the proper provisions?
• Have I prevented my children from following the vocation with which God calls them to his service?
• Have I put obstacles or have I given bad advice?
• When guiding them in their professional training, have I been guided by objective reasons of ability and means, or have I rather followed the dictates of my vanity or selfishness?
• Do I constantly worry about their formation in the religious aspect?
• Have I also been concerned about the religious and moral formation of the other people who live in my house or who depend on me?
• Have I opposed your marriage without reasonable cause?
• Do I allow them to work or study in places where their soul or body is in danger?
• Have I neglected the natural vigilance in the meetings of boys and girls that are held at home?
• Am I prudent when it comes to directing their amusements?
• Have I tolerated scandals or moral or physical dangers among the people who live in my house?
• Do I sacrifice my tastes, whims and entertainment to fulfill my duty of dedication to the family?
• Have I neglected to cultivate friendship with my children, perhaps overestimating the power of my authority or strength?
• Have I been able to create a climate of familiarity avoiding mistrust and ways that prevent the legitimate freedom of children?
• Do I gradually introduce my children to the origin of life, adjusting to their mentality and ability to understand, slightly anticipating their natural curiosity?
• Do I avoid conflicts with my children by downplaying trifles that can be overcome with a bit of perspective and a sense of humor?
• Do I do everything possible to beat the routine in loving my spouse?
• Am I kind to strangers and do I lack that kindness in family life?
• Have I quarreled with my spouse?
• Has there been ill-treatment by word or deed with my spouse?
• Have I strengthened my spouse's authority, avoiding reprimanding, contradicting, or arguing in front of the children?
• Have I disobeyed or insulted him?
• Have I set a bad example?
• Do I complain in front of the family about the burden of domestic obligations?
• Have I left my spouse alone for too long?
• Have I tried to revive faith in Providence and earn enough to be able to have or educate more children?
• Being able to do so, have I stopped helping my relatives with their spiritual or material needs?
• Have I paid or delayed the fair salary, or neglected the spiritual and material well-being of my employees?
• Have I been rebellious to authority and irresponsible with my duties as an employee?
• Have I clearly guided my children to pray and discover their vocation?
• Have I paid taxes and tried to collaborate in the public good of my city and country?

• Do I have enmity, hatred or resentment towards someone?
• Have I stopped talking to someone and I refuse reconciliation or do not do everything possible to achieve it?
• Do I prevent political or professional differences from degenerating into indisposition, ill will or hatred towards people?
• Have I wished a serious evil on my neighbor? Have I rejoiced in the evils that have befallen him?
• Have I allowed myself to be dominated by envy?
• Have I let myself be carried away by anger? Have I caused harm to other people?
• Have I despised my neighbor?
• Have I made fun of others or criticized, teased or ridiculed them?
• Have I mistreated others in word or deed?
• Do I ask for things with bad manners, lacking in charity?
• Have I come to hurt or take the life of others?
• Have I been reckless in driving vehicles?
• Have I practiced, advised or collaborated in carrying out an abortion, knowing that it constitutes a very serious sin that carries with it excommunication?
• Have I contributed to bringing forward the death of a patient under the pretext of avoiding suffering or sacrifice, knowing that euthanasia is homicide?
• With my conversation, my way of dressing, my invitation to attend a show or with the loan of a book or magazine, have I caused others to sin?
• Have I neglected my health?
• Have I attempted to take my own life?
• Have I gotten drunk, drunk excessively or used drugs?
• Have I allowed myself to be dominated by gluttony, that is, by the pleasure of eating and drinking beyond reason?
• Have I wished for death without submitting to God's Providence?
• Have I disregarded the good of my neighbor, not warning him of the material or spiritual danger he is in or not correcting him as requested by Christian charity?
• Have I carried out kidnapping, terrorism, torture or mutilation?
• Have I disrespected the deceased?
• Do I tolerate abuses or injustices that I have an obligation to prevent?
• Have I allowed, out of laziness, serious damage to my work?
• Have I neglected my performance in important things to the detriment of those for whom I work?

• Do I dress inappropriately, leading others to impurity? Do I consider those details nonsense?
• Before attending a show, or reading a book, do I find out its moral qualification so as not to put myself in the immediate situation of sin, thus avoiding the distortions of conscience that it may cause me?
• Have I entertained myself with impure glances?
• Have I sheltered the impure sensations?
• Have I done impure actions? Alone or in what way? How many times or how often?
• Was there any circumstance of kinship or affinity that made it particularly serious? Did those relationships have consequences? Did I do something, surely illegal, to avoid those consequences?
• Do I have friendships that are habitual occasions of sin? Am I willing to leave them?
• In courtship, is true love the fundamental reason for these relationships? Do I live the constant and joyful sacrifice of not turning affection into an occasion for sin?
• Am I degrading human love by confusing it with selfishness and pleasure?
• Courtship should be an opportunity to deepen affection and mutual knowledge; Are my relationships inspired not by a desire for possession, but by a spirit of surrender, understanding, respect, delicacy?
• Do I approach the sacrament of Penance more frequently during courtship to have more grace from God? Have these relationships led me away from God?
• Have I misused marriage? Have I denied the right to the other spouse?
• Have I lacked conjugal fidelity with desires or work?
• Do I make use of marriage only on those days when there can be no offspring? Do I follow this mode of birth control without serious reasons?
• Have I used condoms or taken drugs to avoid having children? Have I induced other people to take them?
• Have I influenced in any way -advice, jokes or attitudes- in creating an anti natalist environment?
• Have I performed lust, that is to say, disordered desire or enjoyment of pleasure as an end in itself, separated from the purpose of procreation and union?
• Have I masturbated?
• Have I had sex before marriage (and there is never any real certainty that there will be such a marriage)?
• Have I participated in or seen pornography in videos or magazines etc.?
• Have I done prostitution?
• Have I committed rape, that is, violently assaulting the sexual intimacy of a person?
• Have I participated in homosexuality, lesbianism, orgies?
• Have I committed adultery, that is, sexual intercourse during marriage, with someone other than your spouse?
• Have I entertained dishonest thoughts or memories?
• Have I brought to my memory impure memories or thoughts?
• Have I allowed myself to be carried away by evil desires against the virtue of purity, although I have not put them into practice?
• Were there any circumstances that aggravated them: kinship, marriage, or consecration to God in the people to whom they were addressing?
• Have I had impure conversations? Have I started them?
• Have I attended amusements that put me in the near opportunity to sin? (certain dances, movies or immoral shows, bad readings or companies).
• Do I realize that putting myself on those occasions is already a sin?

• Have I stolen an object or an amount of money?
• Have I stopped repairing or restoring when I could?
• Have I cooperated with others in any robbery or theft?
• Were there any circumstances that aggravated it, for example, that it was a sacred object? Was the quantity or value of the appropriated of importance?
• Have I deliberately withheld loaned property or lost property?
• Do I retain what belongs to others against the will of its owner?
• Have I harmed others with deception, cheating or coercion in contracts or business relationships?
• Have I been paid for unfair favors?
• Have I forged checks, bills, money, or some other type of deception in order not to pay what is owed?
• Have I damaged your property in another way?
• Do I suffer from gambling that leads me to deprive myself or others of what was legitimately due?
• Have I cheated by charging more than I should?
• Have I spent more than my position allows me?
• Do I try to finish the job well, thinking that bad things should not be offered to God?
• Do I perform the work with due skill and preparation?
• Have I abused the trust of my superiors?
• Have I harmed my superiors or subordinates or other people causing them serious harm?
• Do I facilitate the work or study of others, or do I hinder it in some way, for example, with quarrels, defeatism and interruptions?
• Have I been lazy in the performance of my duties?
• Do I often delay the time to start working or studying?
• Have I stopped giving what is convenient to help the Church?
• Do I give alms (it is used to forgive sins) according to my economic position?
• Do I make an offering (it serves to heal the heart) according to my economic position?
• Have I given a tithe (serves to protect the blessing, drive away Satan) according to my economic position to the Church? Have I supported with my goods the people who are evangelizing full time, be they priests, religious or committed laymen?
• Have I taken with Christian sense the lack of superfluous things, or even necessary?
• Have I defrauded my consort in property?
• Do I unduly withhold or delay the payment of wages or salaries?
• Do I fairly reward the work of others?
• In the performance of public positions or functions, have I allowed myself to be carried away by favoritism, respect of persons, lacking in justice?
• Do I exactly fulfill the social duties, social security payment, with my employees?
• Have I abused the law, to the detriment of a third party, to avoid paying social security?
• Have I avoided or tried to avoid, being able to do so from the position I hold, injustices, scandals, thefts, revenge, fraud and other abuses that harm social coexistence?
• Have I supported immoral and anti-Christian programs of social and political action?
• Have I discovered, without just cause, serious defects in another person, even if they are true, but not known?
• If I have spoken badly about someone, have I then failed to somehow repair the damage caused, for example, by speaking positively about that person?
• Have I slandered, attributing to others what was not true?

• Have I told lies? Have I repaired the damage that could have been followed?
• Do I usually lie, justifying it with the fact that it is about things of little importance?
• Have I stopped defending my neighbor who has been slandered or slandered?
• Have I made reckless judgments against others? Have I communicated them to other people? Have I not rectified that inaccurate judgment?
• Have I revealed important secrets of others, discovering them without just cause? Have I repaired the damage often?
• Have I spoken ill of others out of frivolity, envy, or because I got carried away by a bad temper?
• Have I spoken ill of others -people or institutions- with the sole reason that "they told me" or that "it is said around there"? That is, have I cooperated in this way with slander and gossip?
• Do I take into account that political, professional or ideological differences should not obfuscate me to the point of judging or speaking ill of others, and that these differences do not authorize me to discover their moral defects unless the common good seriously demands it?
• Have I revealed secrets without just cause? Have I used for personal benefit what I knew by silence ex officio? Have I repaired the damage I caused with my performance?
• Have I opened or read correspondence or other writings that, due to the way they are preserved, show that their owners do not want to make them known?
• Have I listened to conversations against the will of those who held them?
• Have I been complicit in vices or serious sins (flattery) to seek an interest, an influence, a service, a friendship or to avoid a problem with someone?
• Have I fallen into the temptation of vainglory, that is, boasting of one's own worth or work?
• Have I collaborated with someone that is, ridiculing with malicious caricatures an aspect of a person's behavior?

• Have I coveted other people's goods?
• Have I been miserly (desire for immoderate appropriation of earthly goods) of wealth and power?
• Have I wished badly on whom I consider competition, be it in sports, business, community, prayer group, parish, church, etc.?
• Have I wished others to fail so that my ideas shine, or my projects are more easily carried out?
• Have I been envious (is it the sadness experienced before the good of my neighbor and the inordinate desire to possess it with someone?

PENITENTIAL ACT
 I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned through my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do;
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sister, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

THE ACT OF CONTRICION
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen
